When the Horse Has Bolted: A Gentle Return to Nervous System Regulation

March 29, 20264 min read

There’s a particular kind of feeling that comes when life suddenly speeds up.

You know it - when your days fill quickly, your energy feels scattered, and somewhere along the way you catch yourself thinking…
how did I get here again?

Lately, this has been my experience.

We are currently moving through the Year of the Fire Horse - a rare and powerful energy that brings movement, intensity, passion, and change. It’s a year that invites action and creativity… but also one that can easily tip us into overwhelm if we’re not anchored within ourselves.

And if I’m honest…

It has felt less like I’m riding the horse - and more like the horse has bolted… and I’m holding on for dear life.

A childhood memory that came rushing back

I was a child, riding my sister’s horse for the first time.

It was calm. Steady. Walking gently.
I remember thinking, this is okay… I’ve got this.

And then everything changed in an instant.

We rounded the corner, the horse saw my sister and mum…
and it just took off.

Full gallop. No warning. No control.

And there I was - gripping tightly, heart racing, completely at the mercy of something much bigger than me.

It ran until it reached where it wanted to go… and then stopped. Abruptly.

I remember feeling shaken. Not just physically - but deeply unsettled by the loss of control.

That feeling stayed with me for a long time.

When life mirrors the moment

Fast forward to now… and I recognise that same sensation.

Life has picked up speed.
There’s a lot happening. A lot being asked. A lot being given.

And somewhere along the way, I’ve drifted from the very things that keep me steady.

The practices that bring me back home.

For me, that is yoga.

This year, I’m studying to become a yoga teacher with Live to Serve Academy - a path that feels deeply aligned, something I know in my body brings me back into balance every single time.

And yet… over the past few weeks, I haven’t made space for my own practice.

Isn’t that always the way?

We know what supports us.
We share it with others.
And yet, in the busyness, we slowly move away from it ourselves.

The truth about nervous system regulation

This is the realisation that landed for me:

My nervous system wasn’t as regulated as I thought it was.

And that’s the thing about regulation - it’s not a concept we understand intellectually.

It’s something we feel in the body.

A regulated nervous system feels like:

  • a sense of steadiness within

  • the ability to respond, rather than react

  • clarity in your thoughts

  • softness in your body

  • capacity to hold what life brings

Whereas dysregulation can feel like:

  • rushing, urgency, or pressure

  • overwhelm or emotional reactivity

  • fatigue and disconnection

  • being stuck in survival mode

And here’s the key:

We cannot live, lead, love, or create from a place of survival.

And when we are dysregulated, we are simply holding on… not truly living.

Coming back to what nourishes the soul

For me, regulation isn’t complicated.

It’s simple… but it requires intention.

It’s:

  • stepping onto my yoga mat

  • walking in nature and letting my thoughts soften

  • breathing deeply and consciously

  • creating small moments of stillness

These are the practices that nourish the soul.

And every time I return to them, I feel it immediately.

My body softens.
My mind quietens.
My breath deepens.

And I remember who I am.

The lesson of the Fire Horse

The Fire Horse energy isn’t here to be controlled.

Fire horse

It’s here to be respected.

This year carries the energy of destruction and renewal - a clearing and reshaping, both individually and collectively.

It is asking us to:

  • let go of what no longer serves

  • step into our truth

  • move forward with intention

But we cannot do that if we are ungrounded.

We cannot move with clarity if we are overwhelmed.

We cannot access our creativity, joy, and passion if our nervous system is in survival mode.

So how can I find myself again?

This is the question I keep coming back to.

And the answer is simpler than we often think:

You don’t need to find yourself - you need to return to yourself.

Return to:

  • your body

  • your breath

  • your practices

  • your rhythm

Return to what regulates you.

Because perhaps this year isn’t about stopping the horse…

But about learning how to ride it with awareness.

A gentle invitation

If you’ve been feeling this too - the pace, the pressure, the sense of holding on…

Let this be your reminder:

Slow down, even just a little.
Create space, even just a moment.
Come back to what steadies you.

Because everything you’re searching for is already within you.

It just needs the space to be felt.

With love,

Kelly xxx
